Producer (Cape Town)
Freelance with the opportunity to convert to permanent in our Cape Town office.
Rival is looking for a Producer to freelance with and eventually join our Cape Town-based team.
As a Producer, you will play a key role in owning and operating Rival Media -the in-house media “company” we are building around our brand. You will work closely with our London-based Executive Producer to oversee the production and distribution of the full suite of our media properties - podcast, video, email, social, research, whitepapers, events, community, etc. You will also have the opportunity to help concept new ideas and campaigns for our marketing activity.
Role
- The focus of this Producer role will be on our media/marketing activity, owning much of the day-to-day planning and production activity
- You will spend most of your time overseeing the production and distribution of content and events, as well as developing our editorial strategy/content calendar, and strategies and tactics to drive distribution for our content, attendance to our events, and the growth of our community
- You’ll have scope for working autonomously and have the ability to really have an impact as part of growing a business
Opportunity
- You will be joining the Rival at an exciting time - we are three years in, growing quickly, and have big plans for the next few years!
- Rival Media’s mission is to understand what drives the growth of challenger brands and uncover the next-gen marketing playbook for marketing leaders, and we do this by building content, research and events for senior marketing leaders globally.
- As a producer, you’ll be instrumental in shaping a brand new B2B publication and having a real impact in shaping the business.
- You’ll be joining the media team which spends 70% of time creating a digital publication for modern marketers and CMOs and 30% of time fulfilling client production requests on scopes alongside our design team.
- Given that Rival operates as part agency, part B2B media company, your role will expose you to both sides of the business.
- We have a global audience client portfolio - you’ll get a truly global perspective and be exposed to brands and projects in North America, Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and Asia.
- We are a small (but mighty!) global team of about 25, so you’ll have the opportunity to learn and work on a wide variety of projects.
- This role holds a ton of potential for the right person, as you’ll be working closely with the founding team shaping the future of the business.
Requirements
We'd like to hear from you if…
- We do not require a minimum years of experience, but you do need to have experience working in an agency or media company producing podcasts, video, events, and written content properties
- Strong organizational skills along with the demonstrated ability to work to a deadline
- A good understanding of what’s happening in new age media (YouTube, TikTok)
- The ability to spot trends in media content and programming
- A start-up mentality and personality: you're mission-driven and not afraid to get stuck in
- Willingness to travel for client engagements as needed and for company retreats once a year
- No university degree is required - we value your experience and skills
We would be particularly excited if...
- You have experience in an early-stage start-up and/or publisher or media business
- If you’ve worked as a producer within a production house, content agency or for a YouTube channel this would also be a plus.
How to apply…

Compensation - once converted to a Permanent Employee
- Our compensation philosophy is to “mid-market base, top-market upside”. As a start-up we can’t compete with big agency/consultancy salaries, but we offer everyone the opportunity to share in the upside of what we’re building together.
- There are three components to our compensation package
- Base Salary - market average for marketing consultancy/agency
- Profit Share - eligibility for a profit share distribution twice a year (after one year of employment) based on company and individual performance
- Employee Liquidity Plan - eligibility for our “shadow stock” plan (after one year of employment)
Benefits - once converted to a Permanent Employee

- Our default policy is for everyone to be in the office two-three days per week (currently Tues/Wed/Thurs). We believe in and have seen the impact of in-person collaboration on our work, culture, and development. However, we hire grown ups and trust people to manage their time and schedule. We understand there will be exceptions to the default rule, as long as we’re all focused on what’s best for the team.
- The equipment and technology you need to be successful, plus additional support if you need to enhance your work from home set-up

- Various surprise and delights & Rival events throughout the year.
